István Regős’s (1954) figurative, individual style built of elements from scenery painting but not linked to it, with its post-modern roots is made of many elements. It is at once surreal, neo-primitive, historicizing and eclectic, but uses elements from kitsch and folk art, in quotation marks. His is a peculiarly autonomous, local (in the best sense) idiom, the essence of which is to create tradition through the rethinking of tradition.
