József Benes (1930–2017) had created a distinctive visual world, a unique voice, which he worked to further develop all his life. While, in every one of his works, he gives expression to the constraints, limitations, burdens and human angst born of the problems of the physical world – of global and social issues – he does so with an unbridled desire for freedom and a creative attitude that knows no compromise. It is in this duality that his works are conceived, embodying the authentic Benesian world that he sought to realise.
