VARGA-AMÁR LÁSZLÓ
László Varga-Amár (1955), with his distinctive, contoured pictorial world, represents a unique colour on the Hungarian visual art scene. He brings his classical knowledge of painting into contrasting juxtaposition with peculiar techniques and the use of foreign materials (such as cellophane, bird feathers, plastic and X-ray film). He often paints works in a series, one composition thereby giving life to the next. Since the mid-1980s, he has been creating large-scale oil on canvas pieces in the spirit of the then-current trans-avantgarde tendency in painting (quasi-landscapes and floating torsos). From 2005 onward, his approach shifted toward abstract art. Since 2006, he has also been creating “spatial paintings” and “two-dimensional sculptures.” These plastic works represent a direct continuation of his aspirations in painting. He often repaints his works, adding new attributes.
